Recommendations on Suicide Reporting & Online Information Dissemination

In an effort to promote responsible media coverage and online discussions regarding suicide, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (CSRP) updated its “Recommendations on Suicide Reporting and Online Information Dissemination” in 2026. While previous versions successfully raised awareness among media professionals, this updated version expands its scope to address the current media landscape. Recognizing that the public increasingly consumes news via social media rather than traditional outlets, the revised guidelines offer tailored recommendations not only for news organizations but also social media users and platform operators. The CSRP is confident that these guidelines will empower journalists, content creators, and social media users to handle suicide-related information with sensitivity and care, thereby fostering a supportive online environment.

The Principles for Reporting on Suicide

  1. Protect privacy and consider the risks borne by vulnerable individuals

  2. Take the opportunity to educate the public about mental health and suicide prevention

  3. Practice self-care in the community of media professionals

*Media professionals are encouraged to include contact information of social services when reporting on suicides and self-harm.
